What is NPK and is that all I need to grow?

In order for plants to flourish, they must garnish from the soil three basic nutrients, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium, you may better recognize this trio as “NPK”.  Each of these three nutrients offer growing plant life, a specific benefit when used in the right proportions.  NPK represents the meat and potatoes" building blocks of plant nutrition

When the proper NPK/ Soil Biology balance is maintained during plant growth cycles, the following results will occur:

  • Greener and more abundant foliage, healthier growth and strength.
  • Optimal plant yields, larger and more healthy, tasteful fruits.
  • And most important of all, strong vigorous root systems that enable plants to feed and drink more effectively, convert nutrients into energy while making plants grow faster, stronger and more resilient to pest issues and disease.

  • There are a number of other minerals found in healthy soil mediums known as trace elements or micro nutrients, that are just that, small amounts of minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium and other elements which must remain in limited amounts, or risk upsetting the soils balance.

Here are the 3 Macro Nutrients "NPK"

Nitrogen, the “N” in “NPK” is most important in the vegetative growth phase.  While in the vegetative growth phase, the plant utilizes the available nitrogen in the medium for the growth of leaves and production of chlorophyll, necessary for photosynthesis.  Overall plant size is determined here by the amount of nitrogen and length of the growth period. Too little nitrogen and plants will experience stunted growth, noticeable in the yellowing of leaves.  Too much nitrogen and the result can be stunted flowering, elongated or “leggy” stems and lowered disease resistance.  Organically, nitrogen is readily found in composts, manure, grasses and seaweeds.

Phosphorus is the “P” in “NPK”, my personal favorite as it is vitally necessary for the production of fullest fruit yields and biggest flowers.  It is also imperative for the building of strong root systems, healthy growth, greater resistance to disease and obviously, full seed production. A word of caution, too much phosphorus and you raise the acid level of your growing medium, endangering the beneficial microbes present, while too little will cause stunted growth, diminished and sterile seed content.

Potassium, is the ”bread and butter” of plant life and also what “K” represents in “NPK”.  Necessary in all stages of plant life, potassium is responsible for stem strength, cell division, healthy coloring of fruit and flower, while balancing water retention and nutrient excess/deficiency.  Potassium assists the plant in the production of sugars, starches and oils, basically all the things we like most about our fruits and flowers.  It carries carbohydrates through the plant’s system, strengthening cellular structure and prolonging shelf life of produce.  A potassium deficiency can be seen in the “burning” of leaf edges, starting from the bottom, as well as obvious decrease in cellular production virility and vigor.  Too much potassium, especially those derived from chemical sources, can inhibit the plant’s retention of nitrogen and other elements necessary for healthy growth.
These nutrients combined, make up the dinner menu of all plant life.

While this menu is important, the proper balance is most important. For plants, too much or too little of a good thing will result in the restriction of growth, limited flowering ability and un-optimized fruit bearing ability or even the death of your plants.

Plants also need something else that enables them to take full advantage of what is on the menu. That something else is organic microbes, beneficial fungi and specific acids that when present in soil, provide improved plant stability, increased feeding ability and reduced fertilizing costs.

When plants feed better, they use nutrients more effectively, increased root growth also means that more nutrients are absorbed before being washed away by watering, or rain. Balanced plants will thrive where stressed or improperly nourished plants will suffer.
