I love pumpkin festivals. Several years ago I was lucky enough to be camping along the California coast one weekend in the town of Half Moon Bay. The weekend that I was there, the whole town was attending the “Half Moon Bay Annual Art and Pumpkin Festival”. As they did, so did I. It was an amazing festival, full of local artists wares, all types of pumpkin food, pies, and amazing festival activities. What was totally astounding was the Pumpkin Competition and Carving Contests. An avid pumpkin carver myself, I have hunted many a pumpkin patch in search of that perfect pumpkin for my families annual pumpkin carving night. Never had I ever imagined how large a pumpkin can get, these were the kind of pumpkins that you need a flat bed truck and a fork lift to move from the patch, like the size of one of those old, cool Volkswagen Beetles.

So after walking around in awe at the size of these pumpkins, I the farmer that I am, asked some of the farmers who had harvested these monster pumpkins what their trick was, how were you able to produce such a huge gourd like squash?
This is apparently top secret stuff as most of the farmers responded to me with answers like,” love, care and attention”, “regular feeding schedule, proper soil nutrition and watering, genetics helps too”, or “that’s top secret, sorry”. They were all real general and none seemed to want to divulge their secrets to how they did it. I finally found a farmer, who’s name I won’t mention, who let me in on the secret. “Humic Acid” he said, “The stuff is like super weight gainer for these giant pumpkins”.
We chatted a bit and we also went over the genetics of the pumpkins, the seeds and mother seed selection. What was interesting and made lots of sense to me was about the Humic Acid.

The way the farmer put it, “It’s like if you were breeding race horses sort of, you could raise the best offspring of two champions but if you neglected to feed and train that horse properly, you would just have a fancy standard horse with great genetics, not ability, strength and the things that make a champion. The difference is that with pumpkins, they don’t run, they just feed. If you picture that pumpkins root system, picture those roots as that plants legs and most importantly mouth. You can just feed your plants fertilizer and water to make them grow, but if you implement humic acid into your soil system, you add a naturally occurring and organic substance that allows you pumpkin to SUPER FEED”!

After doing some research, after this pumpkin festival, I found this farmer to be dead on target correct. Humic Acid is like mother nature’s answer to making plants, fruits and vegetables, and everything else that grows, grows up big and strong. And as all great farmers know, competition is good, your plant is only as good as you provide for it and great soil, soil medium and root growth is what makes champions.
